Today I'd like to share a few things about my favourite essential oil - Lavender.
Lavender is one of the most popular and widely used essential oils. A favourite of bee's seeking pollen, Lavender is distilled from the flower of the lavender plant by steam. Fields off lavender are not only beautiful in terms of fragrance and look they are a great source of an essential aromatherapy oil. It is a very versatile oil and can be used for a wide variety of uses.
I use it daily in a number of ways including:
- As a natural sedative, I use it daily as part of our night time routine including using it on my son to help him relax. I apply a dab of oil to the pulse points behind each ear.
- As an analgesic it can be used to alleviate minor pain including headaches, a small dab to the forehead and gently massaged can assist to relieve pain.
- Lastly Lavender is very useful when treating minor burns, applied directly to unbroken skin it can help to reduce redness and blistering.
This is a few of the ways I use lavender at home.

Aromatherapy Massage is a form of massage therapy where the use of essential oils aims to enhance the treatment. Essential oils are either taken in by scent through the nasal passages or absorbed directly through the skin when incorporated with a massage. When you inhale the scent of an essential oil messages are transmitted to the Limbic System within the brain. The Limbic System controls emotions and helps to influence the nervous system and hormones.
The absorption of the molecules of an essential oil may impact the body the following ways:
- Stimulating the heart
- Reduce stress levels and blood pressure
- Assist breathing - Improve memory retention
- Aid digestion
- Enhance the immune system
The properties of essential oils are as varied as the number of oils themselves including some of the below:
- Lavender & Camomile oils – calming
- Lemon & Grapefruit oils – uplifting
- Eucalyptus – decongestive
- Clove – reduces tooth ache
- Juniper - cleansing
When you have an aromatherapy massage, the use of essential oils can be chosen by yourself or practitioner to suit a particular need or requirement you have. Always use an essential oil not a fragranced oil to benefit from the full properties of the oil. An aromatherapy massage will leave you feeling rejuvenated, refreshed and relaxed.
